sensory overload
(a project about synaesthesia)
"Synaesthesia: the phenomenon that takes place when a specific sensory organ is stimulated and produces sensations in another modality, as well as its own, e.g. colours when hearing (phonisms) or sounds when seeing (photisms)."
In my project I tried to bring together Art and information about this condition. My first concept was to see whether synaesthetes who had visual->sound synaesthesia would also have a reaction to the inkblots in the Rorschach Test. After various attempts – and few satisfying results – I had the idea of working with more synaesthesia types and of making a video, in which I can produce my own visual answers to fit certain experiences. I contacted as many synaesthetes as I could and asked basic questions related to their personal experiences with synaesthesia. In the end, I focused on one of the many synaesthetes I had met over these months, and developed a series of photos, a recreation of a girl's synaesthetic experience when she listened to the song We Will Become Silhouettes by The Postal Service.
here is a short version of the interview I did with Lori, a sound->vision synaesthete.
